Food Assistance Programs: Contribute To Our Pantry
Individual Donations
Each year, the American Red Cross Food Pantry provides food for more than 20,000 people. Clients range from elderly immigrants to single parents, homeless individuals and those living with AIDS. Thirty-three percent of clients served are children, and last year, nearly 200,000 meals were distributed to your neighbors in Eastern Massachusetts through the Boston Food Pantry.
You, your business, organization or school can support the American Red Cross Food Pantry by conducting a non-perishable food drive. You can be assured that your donation of food will reach an individual or a family in need. And, while the majority of food drives are conducted around the winter holidays, please remember that families are hungry throughout the year. Perhaps you would consider a spring or summer food drive to help us meet our year-round needs.
Food Industry Donations
Each year, more than 27% of all the food produced in the United States is wasted: thrown out by retailers, restaurants and consumers. To provide a link from this available food to those who need it most, the American Red Cross of Massachusetts Bay, in partnership with Project Bread, operates the Food Drive for the Hungry.
Every day, Food Drive for the Hungry vans pick up and deliver surplus food from bakeries, food suppliers, farm stands and grocery stores, and deliver them to a network of more than 200 food pantries across the state. This past year, the program distributed more than 6.3 million pounds of food from more than 250 suppliers.
To donate large quantities of food or to learn more about conducting a food drive in your school or business, please call Maureen Schnellmann via email or by calling (617) 375-0700, ext. 230.
